Description
In the midst of the many Buddhist teachings presented at the Florida Community of Mindfulness, it can also be helpful and informative to periodically present a more systematic understanding of who the Buddha was and his fundamental teachings. In this four-week course, Fred Eppsteiner, founding teacher of the Florida Community of Mindfulness, will offer a thorough introduction to these basics of Buddhism. We will begin with the actual life of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, an archetype of a human being awakening to the true meaning and purpose of life. Then we will delve systematically into the fundamental teachings of the “path of awakening” that he promulgated during the course of his nearly forty-five years of active teaching. Finally, we will examine the various practice and meditative paths that have developed within the Buddhist tradition over the past 2600 years. Talks will be supplemented by a list of suggested readings.
Course Instructor Fred Eppsteiner has been a student of the psychology of Buddhist meditation for over 50 years and was a psychotherapist for more than 30 years. He has trained extensively in the Buddhist meditative traditions the U.S. and Asia. He received permission to teach from Thich Nhat Hanh in 1994 and is the editor of two books: The Path of Compassion and Interbeing. He is the founding teacher of the Florida Community of Mindfulness.
