Mindfulness is being fully awake and aware in the present moment. Can mindful teaching and teaching mindfulness improve attention and concentration in the classroom and improve learning?  Can mindfulness practices foster creativity, collaboration and compassion, and support emotional well-being for teachers and students? A panel of educators will discuss the application of mindfulness in the K12 setting. This workshop is intended for all educational professionals (and parents) and especially teachers, administrators, school counselors, psychologists, and social workers. It is co-hosted by the Mindfulness Institute, Center for Human Potential of America, Inc. and the University of South Florida Department of Rehabilitation & Mental Health Counseling.

Participants will: 

1. Increase their understanding of what mindfulness is and gain an overview of current research and application in the K12 setting. 

2. Explore the use of mindfulness practices for teachers, school counselors, school psychologists, social workers and other educational professionals as professional development for stress reduction and supporting skillful interactions with students, parents and colleagues.

3. Increase awareness of mindfulness resources and strategies to support student academic success, through improved attention, better stress management, and social, emotional and behavioral self-regulation. 


Betsy Arizu, MA Counseling

Betsy Arizu, MA has worked in public education for 17 years as a high school chemistry teacher and school counselor.  As a school counselor she began implementing mindfulness in individual and group counseling to promote social and emotional well being, stress reduction, settling the mind before high stakes testing, and mindful creativity in art. She is a workshop leader for the Mindfulness Institute and has been practicing/teaching mindfulness since 2010.  


Kathleen Baten, MAT Middle School Science

Kathleen Baten, is middle school science teacher at Berkeley Preparatory School, having taught middle school science at both Berkeley and Hillsborough County Public Schools.  She has a MAT from Clemson University in Middle Grades Education with an emphasis on Science and Language Arts, and has also taught math, geography, and an engineering elective course at the middle level. She has been practicing mindfulness for about seven years.


Lisa Carlsen, LMHC, School Counselor

Lisa Carlsen is a Guidance and Licensed Mental Health Counselor bringing more than 15 years experience in counseling individuals of various ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, including children, adolescents and adults. Currently at McKitrick Elementary School she has begun collecting data in support of MindUP (mindfulness) curriculum to enhance academic achievement and close the academic gaps related to anxiety within high-performing schools and socio-economic populations of children and their families.  She is highly accomplished in counseling, crisis intervention and mindfulness concepts.


Allison Cline, BA Elementary Education / MS Educational Leadership

Allison Cline is the principal of McKitrick Elementary School. She has spent twenty-five years working with elementary age children as a teacher, resource specialist, and school administrator. Throughout the past ten years she has personally practiced mindfulness through workshop trainings, meditation and nature-based mindfulness activities. She began using mindfulness techniques in Title I classrooms to assist students with focus, anger management and dealing with anxiety. This practice was expanded as she became a school administrator by sharing techniques and strategies that she found successful with her teachers and students. The mindfulness techniques were brought to a school-based practice using the “Mind Up” program to assist in her current setting with high-achieving students who also have the added concerns of performance anxiety and a need for self-resilience.


Ryan Haczynski 

Ryan Haczynski is a math teacher at Strawberry Crest High School. He has been a high school teacher for 11 years and has been practicing mindfulness for the last 5 years. He is also a certified yoga teacher who has been sponsoring both yoga and mindfulness clubs at school for the last 3 years. He has integrated mindfulness techniques into the regular classroom in an effort to have students calm their minds prior to academic engagement.


Natalie Keefer, PhD

Natalie Keefer is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Psychological and Social Foundations department in the College of Education at USF.  Dr. Keefer's research and scholarly interests include equality of educational opportunity and relational aspects of teaching. Dr. Keefer taught mindfulness for academic success and stress reduction as a high school social studies teacher, and began a mindfulness club at her school. Natalie began practicing mindfulness sixteen years ago and regularly integrates mindfulness practices into her daily life.


Jacquelyn Lambert, MA, Licensed School Psychologist

Since 1987 Jacquelyn Lambert has worked with children, adolescents, and young adults, to provide evaluations, treatment recommendations, and counseling related to learning, behavior, and social/emotional difficulties at home, school, and work. She specializes in ADHD, Asperger’s Disorder, anxiety, self-esteem, coping skills, and adjustment to life transitions, using a combination of clinical strategies including cognitive, behavioral, and mindfulness-based approaches to assist individuals in increasing attention and focus, recognizing patterns of thinking and behavior that are ineffective, and identifying positive ways to increase well-being. She has been practicing mindfulness since 2003.


James Stewart

James Stewart is a chemistry teacher, at Wharton High School. After receiving a grant for the Education Foundation, James implemented mindfulness training for teachers and school counselors at Wharton High School by Mindful Schools. He will be starting a mindfulness club at the high school in the spring. 


CEU Information:

Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling Provider Number 50-14766. This course is approved for 3 CEU credits.  Credit will only be awarded with verification of attendance.

To request three inservice points for attending this workshop fill out form SB86018, located in IDEAS under the Instructional Icon, PDS (Professional Development), Documents & Forms, Request for Out of County Inservice.  Use Component Number: 8.423.001 and Component Name:  Professional Development Experience. Submit for approval to Director, Principal, Site Administrator or Content Supervisor prior to attending the workshop.  After the workshop submit paperwork, agenda and verification of attendance (provided at workshop) to the administrator for review & verification, and mail to Staff Development at the address listed on the form.
